What's that Smell? Eliminate Odors from Your Drains!

Last updated 9 months ago

Whenever you wash your hands, take a shower, or wash dishes, you probably don’t think about the state of your drains. Once your drains begin to emanate an unsavory scent, however, you may grow concerned. Luckily, eliminating noxious odors from your home drains is not as difficult as you might think. Here are a few effective remedies:

Baking Soda and Vinegar
Most drain odors are caused by rotting food particles that accumulate inside the pipes. One great way to remove these food particles is to sprinkle baking soda down the offending drain, and follow it up with a cup of vinegar. After letting the mixture sit in your pipes for about half an hour, flush it down with hot water.

Hot Water and Bleach
Mold and mildew are also common sources of drain odors. If you detect a distinct musty scent emanating from your drain, you should consider pouring a mild bleach solution down the drain in order to kill the offending fungus. Again, you should let the solution sit in the drain for about 30 minutes before flushing it with hot water.

Drain Guards
Once you eliminate foul drain odors, you can keep them from returning by installing drain guards all around your home. That way, you can prevent a large volume of food particles and other debris from entering your plumbing system. Drain guards are also great for preventing pesky clogs.

Professional Plumbing Services
If the odor persists, or if you’re uncomfortable with addressing the problem yourself, hire a professional plumber. A foul smell coming from a drain could indicate that your sewer system is in the process of backing up, in which case you’ll need a professional to effectively repair your system.
